What I was then, what I am now

I was a boy who rode his bicycle up and down the sidewalks of a small town in Iowa.

I was the boy who delivered your newspaper and shoveled your driveway

I was an Eagle Scout who built elevated planter beds in a city's park

I was the president of the national honor society in my high school, played my sax in the band and sang in the choir.

I am the father of two sons, who raised two girls who aren't my own.

I am a man who provides for his family as best I can

I am a man who cares deeply for my community and serves on the boards of two local non-profits

I am gay, and didn't choose to be that way.

What did I ever do to deserve to have some of my civil rights taken away...

  1. Nothing. And that's the point.

Your post reminds me of a scene from "Milk" where Harvey goes on a bit of a rampage, pointing out that if civil rights are going to be won for gays, gays need to come out of the closet - because once people realize they know one, or two, or three - they see that there is a human face on what others try to demonize.

The need to put a human face on gays is as strong today as it was 30 years ago, despite all the progress that has been made.

  2. Nothing sir. But as I said in my recent post: People don't get what they deserve. They just get what they get.
