Homophobic Conversation

So I was at lunch today with the "work" gang. Guys I know and like. Somehow, the topic got on gay guys, and Ricky Martin. Immediately, one of them starts spouting all these nasty phrases, etc. Some of the others just chuckled along, others were silent.

I kept thinking--the whole time--if you boys only knew who you were sitting with. My oh my, they sure didn't make me want to share......

Funny thing is, I think one of them might be a closet case like unto myself.

ha.

  1. I was really tired when I watched "Milk" and have not had time to watch it again but one of the things that I remember was Harvey Milk trying to encourage people to come out so that others (straight people) would change their thinking. Ultimately, they would realize that their prejudices were wrong because they would be connected personally to a gay person.

I am not encouraging you to come out in Provo.... Nope. Just saying they may never have realized that they know someone personally. It is changing my family's mind.

  2. I surprised you didn't say anything. Know, I don't know you well — and certainly not your situation. But it always makes me sad to hear of lost opportunities.

  3. Yeah- well, maybe best to keep your balls protected and not show them to your workers.

  4. I've been there - said nothing, done nothing. I've also been there - said something and things changed. I'm promising myself to not say something ever again. There are ways to say something is inappropriate without showing your full colors.

  6. Well, the thing about being out all the time and everywhere and to everyone is that the homophobes tend to avoid your company. So what you effectively do by being out of the closet all the time is segregating your company.

It means you end up never having to endure any more conversations like the one you endured. I suppose it educates people at least indirectly, to the extent that the homophobes get to know you by reputation.
