Not the longest list, but there you have it. So what do you think are the "true signs" one way or another?
Hi, hope you don't mind a stranger commenting on your post, but this is a topic that really interests me.
ReplyDeleteJust by way of explanation, I am a gay man, however I am "straight acting" and don't have many of the characteristics that are usually attributed to gay men in popular American culture e.g. feminine, nasal voice, artsy etc.
I find the topic interesting because before I "came out" (hate that term) and actually got to know other gay men I use to think that all gay men were the stereotypical glam queen. However, since coming out I have learned that there is a full spectrum of gay men including those with traditionally masculine features (e.g. play football, deep voice, drive as SUV etc.) or OSTs as you call them. I think you will also find in Europe and Australia (where I am from), that gay men are not branded the same way as they are in the US.
My opinion is that gay men are exactly the same as straight men, but just happen to like other men. I think that you will find lots of straight men with your "OGTs" and lots of gay men with your "OSTs". People just need to look past the dated stereotype that popular American culture (particularly the religious aspects) seems desperate to hang onto.
gs rusty: I couldn't agree more. All bigotry and stereotyping is just so foolish. Perhaps it is caused by the fact that some of the fellows with more "OGT"s find it harder to "hide out" and therefore are more often seen, known or noticed.
